As a first-class tuna fishing tournament, the Casco Bay Bluefin Bonanza combines highly-skilled anglers from all over the Northeast in a contest of competition, camaraderie, and fun all for a great cause.
The Casco Bay Bluefin Bonanza culminates on Friday of Tournament Week with our annual awards dinner and auction. Social hour begins at 4:00 p.m. — offering a chance to visit with friends, browse our raffles and auction items, learn about bluefin tuna research, and enjoy adult beverages provided by Batson River Brewing and Distilling.
Dinner is a genuine Downeast lobster bake prepared by Red Claw. It includes lobsters sourced from local fishermen, clams from Free Range Seafood, corn from Pineland Farms, and more — a true taste of Maine.
You’ll find great prizes in our bucket raffles and both live and silent auctions. We’ll also be handing out trophies and checks to the tournament’s top fishermen — celebrating the best of the week on and off the water.
When the Sturdivant Island Tuna Tournament wrapped up in 2018 after 21 years, it left a huge gap in both Maine’s tournament scene and in funding for local causes. With the support of the Grondin family, who ran SITT for decades, a new group stepped up — and the Casco Bay Bluefin Bonanza was born.
What began as a goal to break even in our first year turned into something much bigger. We raised enough to award $1,000 scholarships to students at each of Maine’s seven community colleges. Today, we award 16 scholarships annually and have established a $50,000 endowment to support students well into the future.
Recognizing the importance of the bluefin tuna resource, we’ve donated more than $100,000 to the University of Maine’s Pelagic Fisheries Lab. These funds support advanced research and help train future scientists and fishery managers through internships and fieldwork.
We lost one of our own to cancer, but Capt. Lindsay Withers left us with a mission: turn tragedy into impact. Her vision lives on through a fully funded memorial scholarship that provides rural first responders with training and certification in EMT and paramedicine.
