As a first-class tuna fishing tournament, the Casco Bay Bluefin Bonanza combines highly-skilled anglers from all over the Northeast in a contest of competition, camaraderie, and fun all for a great cause.
The dedicated all-volunteer staff at the Bluefin Bonanza continues to seek out new, different and more exciting ways to have a more positive impact on our (your) community. We keep increasing and expanding our support of community college students enrolled in trades and marine science programs because we understand how important that is to providing qualified employees to local businesses. We’re providing more opportunities for future fisheries managers to gain more practical field experience and interact with the fishermen their work will ultimately support. And, we’re boosting our support for ongoing research that is already influencing management of our valuable tuna resource. We’ve got some great new initiatives in the works to promote fishermen and the waterfront and seafood industries that rely on them. The Casco Bay Bluefin Bonanza isn’t just a tournament — it’s a movement rooted in community, conservation, and education. While we celebrate the sport of tuna fishing and the camaraderie it inspires, our true purpose runs deeper than the water we fish.
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we are dedicated to supporting the next generation of Maine’s workforce through educational scholarships. We raise funds that directly benefit students attending Maine’s community colleges and technical schools — individuals who are ready to learn a trade, build careers, and contribute to our local economy. These aren’t just scholarships. They’re stepping stones to brighter futures.
Our mission also extends to supporting causes close to the heart of our coastal communities — from marine research and environmental protection to charitable donations that make a real difference for families in need.
Each ticket sold at our fundraising auction, every sponsorship dollar, and every raffle ticket purchased goes toward these goals. We’re proud to say that the excitement of the tournament fuels meaningful change on land. It’s this balance of sport and service that makes the Bluefin Bonanza something truly special.

The 21st Annual Sturdivant Island Tuna Tournament came to a close in 2018. While the event honored founder Phil Grondin, its conclusion left a major void in Maine’s offshore fishing community.
Nov 09, 2017A dockside conversation between two local fishermen turned into something more. “We’re somebody. Let’s host a tournament.” With support from the SITT team, a new vision was born: the Bluefin Bonanza.
Nov 09, 2017The first Casco Bay Bluefin Bonanza launched with nearly 40 boats and 22 landed tuna — including a 742-pound giant. We awarded scholarships to all seven Maine community colleges and supported tuna research.
2019The tournament has expanded in size, reach, and impact. With more sponsors, more boats, and more funds raised each year, the Bluefin Bonanza has become a celebration of sport, scholarship, and service.
2020 to 2024The future of the Bonanza is bright. With continued support, we’ll reach more students, fund more research, and keep honoring Maine’s fishing traditions through a tournament that gives back.
