Step into the world of Gyotaku, the traditional Japanese art of fish printing! Developed in the 1800s by fishermen as a way to document their catches, Gyotaku (pronounced gyo-tah-koo) uses real fish, ink, and paper to create detailed prints that capture the beauty of each species — scale by scale, fin by fin.
At Youth Day, Nate Garrett of Big Fish Gyotaku will be on site sharing this unique art form. He’ll demonstrate the process, explain its cultural roots, and guide kids through making their very own fish prints to take home — a creative keepsake and hands-on way to learn about our local marine life.
